There alweady linin' up at Tacontento

Ladies and Gentlemen....we're gettin' close.

Presentation on the Power of Tlalpeno

CALDO TLALPENO
Is it the corn tortilla crisps they give you to dip in the soup that put it over the top? Or the shredded chicken or the garbanzos or the green beans or the rice? Or perhaps the garnish of Guajillo chili, avocado, and Tajo cheese? Perhaps it's the mire-poix of tomato, onion, and green peppers that are cooked in the broth then pureed and returned to the broth?
What am I talking about? It's pronounced Tuh-lau-PAYN-yo stew, and now you have to try it!

Coming Soon....The Coolest Fuschia Bar on Earth

Check out this blowed-up version of the design of Bar Agave at Tacontento. The super-xxl "angel soplon" or "blowing angel" presides over a fuschia sandstone bar with antique wood from Antigua, Guatemala (where else!) and adobe bricks on the wall. If Bar Agave wasn't welcoming enough, it will be wide open as the glass doors to the street fold up and go away. Similar to the designs in Guatemala, Tacontento draws people in off the street with its hip, wide-open feel. So around May 15th, if you're walking around South Beach and you see a 300-pound angel blowing at you over the best selection of tequilas ever, stop on in , you'll be happy!

If this guy could talk, what would he say? Any suggestions?

Tacontento - Mateo Flores in Guatemala City

Not far from the great stadium of the same name (Mateo Flores, not Tacontento...yet), this two terraced patio restaurant is a great neighborhood hangout. It's a great spot for locals to enjoy a large goblet of homemade Jamaica or Horchata with handmade tacos.

Meet the....Blowing Angels

OK, maybe that doesn't translate nicely....

These guys hang out at the Tacontento in Zona 10, Guatemala City and, no, they aren't based on a liberal's nightmare of being chased by ghostly Rush Limbaugh heads. They are "LOS ANGELES SOPLON" and we are going to have three of our own blowing angels in South Beach. One of our blowers (they blow good luck btw) will be bigger than life, towering over the 100% agave tequilas in the Bar Agave (see sketch at the sidebar on the right).  They won't be blowing over any junk because Tacontento will be serving ONLY 100% agave tequilas.

Tacontento Tour - Calle Marti in Zona 2

Tacontento Marti is one of the tiniest Tacontentos. Like the others, it's open-air with lots of wood planters around. Zone 2 is a very busy and populated area and this restaurant is always crowded.

Tacontento Tour - Managua, Nicaragua

Right smack in the middle of the "Zona Viva" of Nicaragua's capital city, this is one of the most striking Tacontento stores. To look inside, check out the video here.

Sounds of Tacontento - Zona 10

Imagine you're on one of the busiest corners of Guatemala City with nightclubs and hotels all around. What might it sound like? Here's a new feature; sounds recorded from Tacontento restaurants. This recording is from a typically jam-packed Saturday night at Tacontento in Zona 10 (Zona Viva) of Guatemala City. At 44 seconds we're treatd to the Tacontento staff singing "Happy Birthday" to a young boy dining with his parents. This is immediately followed by the Mariachis singing. Click on the title to hear the sounds of Tacontento in Guatemala.

Tacontento Tour - Honduras coming soon

Not only is South Beach in the works for a May 15th-or-around-there opening, Tacontento's are under construction in Brazil, Antigua (Guatemala), Guatemala City, El Salvador and here's the layout of the Tegucigalpa store. In major cities in the Americas, Tacontento is cornering the "taqueria de esquina" niche (pun intended).

It's Starting to look a lot like Tacontento South Beach

The folding window doors that cover the front of the new Tacontento South Beach have been installed. The bar is finished except for the back wall and the kitchen is ready.

Tacontento Tour - Alamos

Tacontento can have the same fun feel even in a pint-size venue. The smallest free-standing Tacontento is the one here at Alamos, a back porch-size taqueria that seats around 65 people. Small though it is, it's packed with atmosphere. You can catch live soccer matches from the local Guatemalan league to all the European games. The day my friend and I shared a Ta'contento platter we watched the Atleticos de Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1. As usual during games, this little restaurant packs them in.

Tacontento Tour - Huehuetenango

Huehue (WAY-way) for short. This Tacontento is in the city and department of the same name in Guatemala. Mexico is a stone's throw away, but you won't find any better tacos there. El Quetzalteco newspaper had this to say about the franchise inaugurated in late 2009.

That translates to....
Authentic Mexican Food in Huehuetenango
by Dany Castillo
Traditional Mexican dishes, like tacos and Tlalpeno stew, are part of the offerings you can enjoy in Zone 1 Huehuetenango.
Serving up a different taste to huehuetecos, specifically Mexican gastronomy, is the goal of the founders of Tacontento, states Cesar Mendez, owner of the franchise. The inauguracion took place in Cuarta Calle (4th Street) and Septima Avenida (Seventh Avenue), Zone 1.

OK, so it isn't the most magnanimous write-up but the Huehue store has been a resounding success with the locals.

Tacontento Tour - Cuatro Grados Norte

4 Grados Norte is a Bohemian neighborhood in the hilly section of Zona 4 in Guatemala City. Here you can enjoy Tacos al Pastor, ice cold Gallo cervezas and a view of the city and surrounding mountains.
