Now for something completely different...

MANGO IN PEPITORIA!
Never heard of it? Try pumpkin seeds roasted on Tacontento's grills, crushed and tossed with mangoes, served with Chef Carlos's special Jamaica (Ha-MY-ca) Hot Salsa and some more seeds. High in anti-oxidants, high in fiber and flavor - the perfect healthy counterbalance to Tacontento's zero-degree frosty beer.

Sara Liss on Miami.com Tacontenta con Tacontento

Click on the title for the link to the write-up. Below is an excerpt
The goods: Fun, lively Mexican joint Tacontento is the latest option for casual dining on Lincoln Road. The vibe is Baja but the owners are straight out of Latin America, part of a chain of similar restaurants born from a taco stand in Guatemala City. This is the first American outpost, with plans for other Tacontentos to pop up around South Florida soon. There’s an outdoor patio in the works but for now sidle up to a thick wooden high top tables with vintage leather bar stools and feast on platters of tacos and tequila cocktails.

Ambience: This hot pink and turquoise-colored den of Aztec delicacies is tucked away on Lincoln Lane (in the former Idol’s Gym), and is decked out in festive piñatas, tapestries and cushions made by Guatemalan Indians and terra cotta sculptures. The inviting fuchsia sandstone bar is made with antique wood from Antigua and presided over by a massive “angel soplon” (a trippy angel with big cheeks). There’s a busy open kitchen in the back, where a team of chefs clang away preparing platters of tacos, enchiladas and fresh-made tortillas.

The grub: Down home Mexican cooking. There’s nothing fancy or high-tech about the grub here; it’s fresh, hearty and generous. Prices are inexpensive compared to other trendy Mexican spots; starters are $5-$8, taco platters are $9-$11 and mains average $16.

Paco, our potent Paquete Moches, is smiling

Our PAQUETES,  those larger-than-life platters Tacontento has served to make many a Latin American foodie and Gringo tourist very contentO, are a big hit already in South Beach. Clockwise from left we have the Flautas de Papa (seasoned potato taquitos with Mexican cream and fresh Cotija cheese), Quesadillitas (Housemade corn tortillas with Queso Blanco), Guacamole (fresh California Haas Avocado sauce), House Recipe Chorizo, Pork Loin, Churrasco (Skirt Steak), Chicken Breast, and Pastor (Adobo-marinated pork with onion), followed by more Quesadillitas and Flautas and, finally, Cebollitas (Grilled Scallions). In the middle is Queso Fundido which is Spanish for "stop being confused - you know it's time for Tacontento!"  All this food going clockwise reminds me that it's time to eat at Tacontento! Gooooool! Sorry - got carried away...

Our Prayers Answered - we finally opened for business one minute ago!

Here is our General Manager Jim, praying the night Tacontento hired him, that we'd open fast. Fortunately, we can say with certainty that he has grown into the job! The dog is unattested. If anyone knows what his name was, let us know on Facebook.

Miami Herald mentions Tacontento South Beach

It's aqui. It says we hope to open to the public Friday the 18th, but, alas, it looks like Monday the 21st for Miami Beach's first official taste of TC's Caldo Tlalpeno, Sopa Azteca, Chicharron de Queso, and Tacos Campechanos - to name a few. Stay tuned.

If we could be more inviting, you'd already be here at Tacontento

Got twelve mouths to feed? A tribe of your own to please? Then our ancient Mayan harvest table is for you and your hambrientos. Just don't spill any Chipotle Mayonnaise on the ceremonial tapestries. It doesn't blend in. The Salsa Roja or Salsa Verde yes, but not the Chipotle Mayo.

Urban Daddy on Tacontento - A Pink Taco Den in South Beach

Ah, the color pink.

You can look pretty in it. You can be named it. And, most important, it's one hell of a hue to devour a taco in...

Introducing Tacontento, your new technicolor land of coal-fired tacos, soft-open now and fully open this Friday in South Beach.

First, let's address the decor. There's a lot of hot pink and turquoise for your eyes to absorb in here, so you might feel like you've stepped into a groovy burrito joint in San Francisco's Mission District. But you'd be wrong, because this spot is straight out of Latin America, the first US restaurant of a chain with similar places in Honduras, El Salvador and Brazil (nobody makes Mexican like the Brazilians).

Whether you're coming in with a date or just a hard-drinking, fuchsia-loving band of misfits, you'll want to head straight for the angel-presided bar and summon something tequila-y like a La Fuente de la Juventud (cucumber juice, cilantro, jalapeño and tequila).

That will set the stage for your platter of Tacos al Pastor, full of pork that's been marinated in a spice blend and slow cooked over an open coal fire for a smokier flavor.

We are a big proponent of clean coal technology.

Almendrado, the greatest Mexican secret is about to take South Beach by storm under the auspices of the Blowing Angels [Angeles Soplones] of Bar Agave at Tacontento. If you mention this blogpost and we're open, your first taste of Almendrado is on us. Saluuuuud!

Pork Loin Burritos are on the grill

We debuted our Pork Loin tacos to some friends in preparation for the opening this week. As they say in Spanish, Mmmm rico. Instead of one we give you two stuffed with grilled meats, beans, and guacamole.

Angel Chupon

Our camera system found out who was drinking all the beer, Yes, it was...Cacheton.
Now the angeles soplones are flying high above the coolest Margaritas like the Acai Ta'Comoquiere and the uber-healthy Fuente d'la Joventud - a restorative combination of cilantro, cucumber, agave nectar, fresh squeezed limes and lots of 100% Blue Agave tequila. Very cool.

Bar Agave Blowing Together

Our guests have decided to name the big angel Gordiflon, which is Spanish for, "Damn, he's really fat!" But, honestly, though, he is only blowing a lot of good luck. The young lady to Gordiflon's left is Kora the super-service explorer. Her goal is to ensure that you leave Tacontento South Beach having the best time since the last time you partied at a Tacontento.

Here Come the Angels

They're short. They're cute. They're sexy, and they just got off the boat from Guatemala. The lady angels even come complete with work visas (applied for 10 years ago of course). Now they'll be solely dedicated to overseeing the best service on South Beach!

The Indefatigable Torta

The classic Mexican sandwich comes with your choice of meat - in this photo it's Pastor, marinated pork with a flurry of pineapple - and a layer of frijoles on one side with guacamole on the other. Try it with cheese and our housemade curtido, freshly pickled jalapenos and carrots. It's indefatigable. Why? You never get tired of torta, of course!

Eater Miami is talking about Tacontento already.
Tacontento, the Mexican taqueria hailing from Guatemala and 14 other locations in Latin America, is prepping for an early June opening. Translated as "be happy" in English, the taco spot uses no preservatives, no can openers and no freezers. Tortillas are made onsite at a traditional Comal and salsas are prepared daily. There will be outdoor patio seating and a full bar as well. Everything on the menu is under $20. Tacocento's Bar Agave will feature all sorts of cocktails made with, among other things, 100 % blue agave tequila. The restaurant will be open Sunday through Wednesday from noon to midnight and Thursday through Saturday from noon to 1am. [EaterWire]

Bigger Than Life - Trompo de Pastor

13 Different seasonings in a special vinegar and citrus marinade, an onion on top and a pineapple on the bottom, the "Trompo de Pastor" is a work of art. Hints of orange, apple, and vinegar explode in the mouth with an astonishing bouquet of herbs and spices. We could say it's better than sex, but we wouldn't want to get too personal........

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Which of the two is the best sincronizada?

Even the two men at left would have to admit the presence of two crisped flour tortillas stuffed with ham and cheese and lots of bright green guacamole would be more than enough to satisfy a man's appetite; even that of two men wearing tutus at Tacontento...

Tacontento Guastatoya - Small Town, Big Taste

One of the older Tacontento franchises in Guatemala is in the small, provincial town Guastatoya, a little less than 50 miles from Guatemala City in El Progreso department (state). Check out the angels below. They always hang out on the opposite side of the room from the blowing angels (LOS ANGELES SOPLONES) so their little candles won't get blown out.

Churrasco Steak, Chorizo, Chicken, and Tacos al Pastor with the shaved pineapple in front. Has Miami beach seen tacos like these? Uh, NO.
[Our apologies to the Adobe Pork Tenderloin, Cochinita Pibil, Shrimp and Fish tacos - they were on vacation when the photo was taken.]

A Look at Tacontento Fiestas Past

A rose between two Carloses? Founder and visionary Carlos Cordon (in white) and Executive Chef Carlos Garcia are in good company at the August 2008 inauguration of the Calle Marti Tacontento. Behind them are the Angeles Soplones that are always invited to store openings...and tend to hang out indefinitely. To Chef Carlos' right is the "Trompo al Pastor" for the Tacos al Pastor that Tacontento is famous for.
Tacontento South Beach will be having their inauguration in about two weeks with a Grand Opening Fiesta a few weeks after that. Stay tuned. The Mariachi girl is invited.

There alweady linin' up at Tacontento

Ladies and Gentlemen....we're gettin' close.

Presentation on the Power of Tlalpeno

CALDO TLALPENO
Is it the corn tortilla crisps they give you to dip in the soup that put it over the top? Or the shredded chicken or the garbanzos or the green beans or the rice? Or perhaps the garnish of Guajillo chili, avocado, and Tajo cheese? Perhaps it's the mire-poix of tomato, onion, and green peppers that are cooked in the broth then pureed and returned to the broth?
What am I talking about? It's pronounced Tuh-lau-PAYN-yo stew, and now you have to try it!

Coming Soon....The Coolest Fuschia Bar on Earth

Check out this blowed-up version of the design of Bar Agave at Tacontento. The super-xxl "angel soplon" or "blowing angel" presides over a fuschia sandstone bar with antique wood from Antigua, Guatemala (where else!) and adobe bricks on the wall. If Bar Agave wasn't welcoming enough, it will be wide open as the glass doors to the street fold up and go away. Similar to the designs in Guatemala, Tacontento draws people in off the street with its hip, wide-open feel. So around May 15th, if you're walking around South Beach and you see a 300-pound angel blowing at you over the best selection of tequilas ever, stop on in , you'll be happy!

Tacontento - Mateo Flores in Guatemala City

Not far from the great stadium of the same name (Mateo Flores, not Tacontento...yet), this two terraced patio restaurant is a great neighborhood hangout. It's a great spot for locals to enjoy a large goblet of homemade Jamaica or Horchata with handmade tacos.

Tacontento in Rio this Fall!

Sorria, amigos. Tacontento is coming to Rio de Janeiro this August.

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Meet the....Blowing Angels

OK, maybe that doesn't translate nicely....

These guys hang out at the Tacontento in Zona 10, Guatemala City and, no, they aren't based on a liberal's nightmare of being chased by ghostly Rush Limbaugh heads. They are "LOS ANGELES SOPLON" and we are going to have three of our own blowing angels in South Beach. One of our blowers (they blow good luck btw) will be bigger than life, towering over the 100% agave tequilas in the Bar Agave (see sketch at the sidebar on the right).  They won't be blowing over any junk because Tacontento will be serving ONLY 100% agave tequilas.

Tacontento Tour - Calle Marti in Zona 2

Tacontento Marti is one of the tiniest Tacontentos. Like the others, it's open-air with lots of wood planters around. Zone 2 is a very busy and populated area and this restaurant is always crowded.

Tacontento Tour - Managua, Nicaragua

Right smack in the middle of the "Zona Viva" of Nicaragua's capital city, this is one of the most striking Tacontento stores. To look inside, check out the video here.

Sounds of Tacontento - Zona 10

Imagine you're on one of the busiest corners of Guatemala City with nightclubs and hotels all around. What might it sound like? Here's a new feature; sounds recorded from Tacontento restaurants. This recording is from a typically jam-packed Saturday night at Tacontento in Zona 10 (Zona Viva) of Guatemala City. At 44 seconds we're treatd to the Tacontento staff singing "Happy Birthday" to a young boy dining with his parents. This is immediately followed by the Mariachis singing. Click on the title to hear the sounds of Tacontento in Guatemala.

Tacontento Tour - Honduras coming soon

Not only is South Beach in the works for a May 15th-or-around-there opening, Tacontento's are under construction in Brazil, Antigua (Guatemala), Guatemala City, El Salvador and here's the layout of the Tegucigalpa store. In major cities in the Americas, Tacontento is cornering the "taqueria de esquina" niche (pun intended).

Saturday, April 10, 2010

It's Starting to look a lot like Tacontento South Beach

The folding window doors that cover the front of the new Tacontento South Beach have been installed. The bar is finished except for the back wall and the kitchen is ready.

Tacontento Tour - Alamos

Tacontento can have the same fun feel even in a pint-size venue. The smallest free-standing Tacontento is the one here at Alamos, a back porch-size taqueria that seats around 65 people. Small though it is, it's packed with atmosphere. You can catch live soccer matches from the local Guatemalan league to all the European games. The day my friend and I shared a Ta'contento platter we watched the Atleticos de Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1. As usual during games, this little restaurant packs them in.

Monday, April 5, 2010

Tacontento Tour - Huehuetenango

Huehue (WAY-way) for short. This Tacontento is in the city and department of the same name in Guatemala. Mexico is a stone's throw away, but you won't find any better tacos there. El Quetzalteco newspaper had this to say about the franchise inaugurated in late 2009.

That translates to....
Authentic Mexican Food in Huehuetenango
by Dany Castillo
Traditional Mexican dishes, like tacos and Tlalpeno stew, are part of the offerings you can enjoy in Zone 1 Huehuetenango.
Serving up a different taste to huehuetecos, specifically Mexican gastronomy, is the goal of the founders of Tacontento, states Cesar Mendez, owner of the franchise. The inauguracion took place in Cuarta Calle (4th Street) and Septima Avenida (Seventh Avenue), Zone 1.

OK, so it isn't the most magnanimous write-up but the Huehue store has been a resounding success with the locals.

Tacontento Tour - Cuatro Grados Norte

4 Grados Norte is a Bohemian neighborhood in the hilly section of Zona 4 in Guatemala City. Here you can enjoy Tacos al Pastor, ice cold Gallo cervezas and a view of the city and surrounding mountains.
